Year 9 Options

As pupils move into Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), they begin a programme of study that includes both compulsory subjects and optional courses. The options process allows pupils to personalise part of their curriculum by selecting subjects that reflect their interests, strengths and future aspirations.

All pupils will continue to study a core curriculum, which includes English, Mathematics, Science, Cymraeg, Games, and Health and Wellbeing. In addition to this, pupils will choose a number of option subjects, depending on their individual learning pathway. The school offers a range of pathways to ensure that all pupils are appropriately supported and challenged.

How the options process works

  • Pupils receive guidance through assemblies, lessons and discussions with staff during the week leading up to Options Evening.
  • Pupils and parents are invited to attend the Year 9 Parents and Options Evening on Thursday 15th January 2026, from 3:30pm to 6:30pm, where they can learn more about the courses available.
  • Option choices will be submitted online via a Google Form, which will be sent to pupils’ school email addresses on 15th January 2026.
  • The deadline for submitting option choices is Friday 30th January 2026. This deadline must be met to ensure a fair allocation of places.
  • Provided no changes are required, pupils will be informed of their final option allocations and what they will be studying during the summer term. If any changes do need to be made, pupils and parents will be contacted, and discussions will take place to ensure that pupils are happy with their final choices.

Please note that while the school aims to accommodate all pupils’ preferences, we cannot guarantee that every pupil will receive all of their chosen options. This may occur for several reasons, including:

  • Oversubscription: Some subjects attract more pupils than the number of places available.

  • Group size requirements: Certain subjects can only run if enough pupils choose them; if numbers are too low, the course may not be viable.

  • Staffing and timetable limitations: Specialist staffing and timetable structures may prevent certain combinations of subjects from running simultaneously.

  • Resource availability: Some subjects require specific rooms, equipment or facilities, which may limit the number of groups we can offer.

We will always do our best to allocate pupils to their preferred choices, but these practical considerations mean that final allocations cannot be guaranteed.
